It’s not enough for award-winning filmmaker Jon M. Chu to be directing TWO Wicked movies.
The In The Heights and Crazy Rich Asians director has now set his sights on the Andrew Lloyd Webber canon, with a new film in the works for Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
The movie has been greenlit by Amazon Studios, masterminded by Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group.
Lloyd Webber had brought in former MGM TV exec Charles Farmer last year to run the group, in a push to develop more TV and movies around his portfolio of shows including The Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard and Cats, but we believe Farmer left the group in February 2023 after less than a year.
Jon M. Chu is partnering up with Scott Sanders on the film, in a screenplay written by Daniel Goldfarb – the writer of HBO series Julia starring Sarah Lancashire.
Sanders is the producer of forthcoming movie musical adaptation of The Color Purple stage show, released later this year starring Halle Bailey.
Chu is mid-filming on the new Wicked movies for Universal Pictures and Marc Platt Productions (Dear Evan Hansen, Wicked on stage), with a starry cast includes Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Keala Settle, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and more!
Producers of the Joseph movie are Scott Sanders and Mara Jacobs for SGS Pictures, Jon M. Chu, Lance Johnson and Jane Lee for Electric Somewhere, with Benjamin Lowy, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber executive producing.
There’s still no news on the much-anticipated, and long awaited, movie adaptation of Lloyd Webber’s musical Sunset Boulevard, rumoured to be starring Glenn Close.
Other Lloyd Webber screen adaptations include Phantom, Evita, and the much derided Tom Hopper movie of Cats.
Lloyd Webber currently has long-runner The Phantom of the Opera playing in London at Her Majesty’s Theatre, and a new production of his musical Aspects of Love is heading to the Lyric Theatre in May starring Michael Ball.
