Broadway’s beloved musical Wicked has accomplished another extraordinary feat. On April 11, 2023, the production celebrates its 7,486th performance at the Gershwin Theatre, surpassing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical CATS and becoming the 4th longest running production in Broadway history. Later this year, the show will also mark its 20th anniversary on Broadway.
Wicked began its previews on Broadway on October 8, 2003, with an official opening on October 30. The original cast included Tony winners Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. The musical, based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman.
The production, directed by Joe Mantello and featuring musical staging by Wayne Cilento, scenic design by Eugene Lee, costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Kenneth Posner, sound design by Tony Meola, projections by Elaine J. McCarthy, wig and hair design by Tom Watson, music supervision and arrangements by Stephen Oremus, orchestrations by William David Brohn, and dance arrangements by James Lynn Abbott, won three Tony Awards in 2004, including Best Actress in a Musical for Menzel.
Wicked has won more than 100 international awards and has been performed in over 100 cities across 16 countries worldwide. The musical has been translated into six languages, seen by nearly 65 million people, and has earned over $5 billion in global sales.
Currently, the musical is in its 17th year in London at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, and a U.K. tour will re-launch in Edinburgh in December. Book tickets to Wicked in London here. Wicked will also return to Australia this summer, with performances beginning in Sydney in August, and to Japan, with performances beginning in Tokyo in October.
