Hot new original musical Cake: The Marie Antoinette Playlist is lined up for a short West End theatre run this September 2023.
The show is heading to the Lyric Theatre in London, from 20 to 24 September 2023.
The mixed genre show, that pushes the boundaries of what a musical should look like, combines a musical, with a gig, and even ballet, to take audiences to 18th Century France and the court of King Louis and Marie Antoinette.
Cake is directed and choreographed by Olivier Award winner Drew McOnie (In the Heights; Jesus Chris Superstar) and has a book by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm (Emilia).
The show’s pop, R&B and rap score is by Tasha Taylor Johnson and Jack McManus.
A starry West End cast includes Zizi Strallen – fresh from playing the lead in Mary Poppins in the West End, and Six alumni Renée Lamb.
The creative team credits are Book by Morgan Lloyd Malcom, Music by Tasha Taylor Johnson and Jack McManus, Lyrics by Tasha Taylor Johnson, Direction and Choreography by Drew McOnie, and based on an idea by Paul Taylor Mills.
The show started its life as part of the new musical festival MTFestUK, and ran at the Turbine Theatre in London from 30 January to 11 February 2023, as well as a recent UK tour including The Lowry Salford and the Curve in Leicester.
Drew McOnie’s other projects include a forthcoming new musical based on hit movie The Artist, which is set to open at Theatre Royal Plymouth; and the UK tour of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Zizi Strallen is currently starring in Rock Follies at Chichester Festival Theatre.
