National Theatre revival of The Crucible to open in West End

Lyndsey Turner’s acclaimed National Theatre revival of The Crucible will transfer to London’s West End for a limited engagement this Summer.

It will play the Gielgud Theatre from 7 June to 2 September 2023, between To Kill a Mockingbird finishing on 20 May, and before Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends starts on 16 September 2023.

Considered one of the most notable works of the last century, Arthur Miller’s play follows the Salem Witch Trials and a group of townsfolk who fall into paranoid chaos. The National revival was met with glowing 4 star reviews when it first ran on the Olivier stage, being described as “Gripping revival of Arthur Miller’s masterpiece speaks to us with urgent force.”

“I am very pleased to announce the West End transfer of Lyndsey Turner’s highly arresting production of The Crucible to the Gielgud Theatre. Audiences were transfixed when this classic was performed in the Olivier theatre last autumn and I can’t wait to share it with more theatre-goers,” said Director of the National Theatre Rufus Norris.

The play has design by Es Devlin, costume design by Catherine Fay and lighting design by Tim Lutkin. Sound design is by Tingying Dong (content design) and Christoper Shutt (system design).

The composer and arranger is Caroline Shaw, and arranger and music director is Osnat Schmool. Fight director is Bret Young with Ita O’Brien and Louise Kempton for intimacy on set. The associate director is Blythe Stewart, and dialect coaches are Danièle Lydon and Hazel Holder.

Casting for the West End transfer is to be announced. The cast from the National production featured Brendan Cowell (Yerma), Erin Doherty (The Crown, My Name is Rachel Corrie) and Fisayo Akinade (Heartstopper, Cucumber.

The National Theatre also announced today a new production written by James Graham, set to star Joseph Fiennes as footballer Gareth Southgate called Dear England.

The Crucible runs from 7 June 2023 until 2 September 2023 at the Gielgud Theatre. See here for tickets to The Crucible.
