Chichester Festival Theatre to revive The Sound of Music starring Gina Beck

Chichester’s summer musical this year will be a major new revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s much-loved classic The Sound of Music, starring Gina Beck.

Gina Beck stars as Maria in a major new revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein blockbuster The Sound Of Music directed by Adam Penford (Piaf, The Madness of George III), Artistic Director of Nottingham Playhouse.

Gina Beck is best known for performances including Nellie Forbush in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific in Chichester, London and on tour.

Set in Austria in 1938, free-spirited nun Maria is sent away from her abbey to become governess to the widowed Captain von Trapp’s seven children. She brings music and laughter back to his unfeeling household, but the future holds more joy and jeopardy than she ever dreamed possible.

The show’s fabulous songs include Climb Ev’ry Mountain, My Favorite Things, Edelweiss, Do-Re-Mi and The Sound of Music.

The wider creative team includes design by Robert Jones (Murder on the Orient Express, The Unfriend, Oklahoma!). The choreographer will be Lizzi Gee; the musical supervisor, Gareth Valentine; musical director Matt Samer; original orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennett; orchestral adaptation by Larry Blank; lighting designer, Johanna Town; sound designer, Paul Groothuis; casting director Natalie Gallacher CDG for Pippa Ailion Casting; and children’s casting director Verity Naughton CDG.

Last summer’s big Chichester musical was a revival of Crazy For You directed by Broadway legend Susan Stroman and starring Charlie Stemp and Carly Anderson – which is coming to the West End’s Gillian Lynne Theatre in London this Summer.

The Sound of Music will play the Festival Theatre in Chichester from 10 July to 3 September 2023.
