A Streetcar Named Desire to transfer to the West End’s Phoenix Theatre starring Paul Mescal, Patsy Ferran, Anjana Vasan

The Almeida has announced that its acclaimed new production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire is transferring into the West End.

The play will open at the Phoenix Theatre in London on 20 March 2023, running for six weeks until 29 April 2023.

Directed by Olivier and Critics’ Circle Award winner Rebecca Frecknall (Cabaret), the production’s original cast will follow the show into the West End, including Oscar nominated (as of today!) Paul Mescal (Aftersun, Normal People) as Stanley, Olivier Award winner Patsy Ferran (Summer & Smoke) as Blanche, Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts) as Stella, and Dwane Walcott (One Night in Miami, Our Girl) as Harold ‘Mitch’ Mitchell.

The show has sold-out the Almeida, with impressive reviews from the critics, including five-stars from The Times, The Sunday Times, The Observer, and The i.

Paul Mescal said in a press statement: “I’m incredibly excited that Streetcar is being transferred to the West End with this formidable cast and creative team, led by the exceptionally talented Rebecca Frecknall. It’s my favourite play and it’s wonderful to be able to share it with a wider audience”.

Director Rebecca Frecknall said: “I’m thrilled we will have the opportunity to share this production with a wider audience. It’s a testament to this fantastic company and incredible play. It’s been moving to see how audiences have responded to our work and I’m excited to see how the piece will evolve in the West End.”

Adam Speers, Executive Producer of the Phoenix’s owner, Ambassador Theatre Group, told Baz at Deadline that A Streetcar Named Desire is “the first big opening of 2023, audiences and critics have already been blown away — so it’s extraordinary to have managed to find a way to bring this amazing production into the West End for even a short time.”

The creative team of A Streetcar Named Desire also includes Set Designer Madeleine Girling, Costume Designer Merle Hensel, Lighting Designer Lee Curran, Sound Designer Peter Rice, Composer Angus MacRae and Casting Director Julia Horan CDG.

A Streetcar Named Desire is produced by ATG Productions, the Almeida Theatre, Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin productions.

Tickets will go on sale on 1 February 2023.

Currently playing at the Phoenix Theatre is Michael Frayn’s Noises Off, in a revival starring Felicity Kendal, Matthew Kelly and Tracy-Ann Oberman. Noises Off plays at the Phoenix until 11 March 2023.
