It’s not enough that Paul Mescal has reportedly been cast in Ridley Scott’s new Gladiator sequel.
He is now rumoured to be up for Richard Linklater‘s movie version of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth‘s acclaimed musical Merrily We Roll Along.
The screen and stage star is a busy man, currently giving his Stanley in the Rebecca Frecknall’s new production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire at the Almeida Theatre.
The star of Aftersun and Normal People will join the cast of Richard Linklater‘s multi-year project, replacing Blake Jenner as Broadway composer Franklin Shepard.
The movie cast also includes Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein. Filming began in 2019 for the project, which will film over the next 20 years in reverse chronological order – in line with the stage musical, which starts when the group of 3 friends are in their 40’s, and ends when they are in their mid-20s.
Linklater has form in filming long projects, with his movie Boyhood covering a 12 year filming period, and getting six Oscar nods.
Merrily We Roll Along is currently wowing audiences and critics in New York, with Maria Friedman’s Menier Chocolate Factory production starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez getting five-star reviews, and is transferring from the New York Theatre Workshop to Broadway in Fall 2023.
