Reviews are in for Derren Brown: Showman, the master illusionists latest show which is now playing at the Apollo Theatre in London’s West End.
Fresh off a universally acclaimed 155-date national tour, Derren Brown brings his unique brand of uplifting magical genius to the heart of theatre-land for the festive winter season.
Sworn as we are to secrecy, we can’t say what’s in the show – save to say that Brown negotiates adroitly the unease generated when trickery and tender hearts come together. Showman is his most personal show to date. The show is created with his usual collaborators Andy Nyman and Andrew O’Connor, who also direct. The creative team includes set & costume design by Simon Higlett, lighting by
Charlie Morgan Jones, sound by Colin Pink, video design by Simon Wainwright and musical supervision by Matthew Freeman.
Derren Brown: Showman runs until 19 March 2023 at the Apollo Theatre, London.
"Derren Brown is still the greatest showman, but his emotional honesty is even more spellbinding"
"Brown's latest tour has arrived in the West End – and, strangely, it's the most festive show in town"
"A chest-rattlingly entertaining two hours of theatre. It’s moving, thrilling and contains some of the most unearthly sights I’ve ever seen on stage."
"A performance that will blow your mind"
"There’s a coup in the closing moments so mindblowing, so laser-guided, to undermine the hold-out scepticism of an unbeliever like me, that I ended up feeling he had surpassed even himself. With Brown and his co-creators Andy Nyman and Andrew O’Connor, we really are in the presence of masters."
"Britain’s favourite magician conjures another hit"
"He brings his own life on stage and fuses raw honesty with prestidigitation, misdirection and conjuror’s fibs. You may just leave with tears in your eyes. And that’s magic. "
"Only in person do you really experience how hypnotic he is. "
"Brown’s unwavering poise and trademark gallows humour carry a show that swings – often very suddenly – on the pendulum between playful and sobering, heartfelt and horrifying."
"My advice is this: prepare to feel it all. Pathos and delight, laughter and alarm. "
"As clever as it is charismatic"
"Existential profundity elevates mischievous, moving, mind-bending entertainment"
"So dazzling and discombobulating, so uplifting, funny and blindsidingly moving that to say more about it would indeed be an especially spiteful spoiler."
