Funny Girl Broadway Lea Michele

Funny Girl cast album to be released tomorrow starring Lea Michele; first look video of Lea in the recording studio

The cast of Funny Girl on Broadway, including star of the show Lea Michele, have recorded a cast album.

The album will be digitally released tomorrow, 18 November 2022, by Sony Masterworks Broadway, with physical copies released on 20 January 2023.

The news was announced by Lea herself at the end of Wednesday night’s show in New York, and a statement was also made on the show’s Instagram page, saying: “We have a little bit of a secret that we wanted to let you all in on and — Oh! We’re live on Instagram. We are all so so so proud to announce that we are going to be releasing our original cast Broadway recording of ‘Funny Girl,’” Michele said. “We worked so hard in the studio to make such an incredible album that I have heard and, as the biggest ‘Funny Girl’ fan, I am so proud of it.”

The original cast of the show, including Beanie Feldstein and Jane Lynch, never got to record a cast album before they left.

Featuring all of the show’s great songs including “Don’t Rain on My Parade”, “People”, “I’m the Greatest Star” and “Who Are You Now”, the cast recording will feature the current company including Lea Michele as Fanny Brice, Ramin Karimloo as Nicky Arnstein, Tovah Feldshuh as Fanny Brice’s mother Rosie and Jared Grimes as Eddie Ryan.

Other cast on the album include Peter Francis James, Ephie Aardema, Debra Cardona, Toni DiBuono, Martin Moran, Miriam Ali, Amber Ardolino, Daniel Beeman, Colin Bradbury, Kurt Csolak, John Michael Fiumara, Leslie Donna Flesner, Afra Hines, Masumi Iwai, Aliah James, Jeremiah James, Danielle Kelsey, Stephen Mark Lukas, Alicia Lundgren, John Manzari, Liz McCartney, Connor McRory Katie Mitchell, Justin Prescott, Mariah Reives, Barbara Tirrell, and Leslie Blake Walker.

Lea’s performance in Funny Girl has garnered great reviews and packed houses for the show. She started her run on 6 September 2022 at the August Wilson Theater on Broadway, and is scheduled to stay in the show until 2023.

Funny Girl is directed by Michael Mayer, reuniting with Lea after their famous Broadway production of Spring Awakening. The show also has a new book by Broadway royalty Harvey Fierstein, based on the original by Isobel Lennart. The show’s music is by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Bob Merrill.

The album is produced by David Caddick and David Lai and co-produced by Sonia Friedman, Scott Landis, David Babani, Michael Mayer, Brian Gillet, Huck Walton, Sean Keller and Marc Levine.
