Music superstar Adele has revealed the one part she would consider playing on stage – in order to get her EGOT!
During a fan event to promote her new music video for “I Drink Wine” she let slip that the one musical theatre role she might be able to pull off would be Mama Rose in Gypsy, in order to bag a Tony Award and so complete the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) awards list.
She won an Emmy for her TV special “Adele: One Night Only”, has multiple Grammy awards, an Oscar for James Bond theme tune “Skyfall”, but is just the missing Tony Award!
She was quoted by Broadway World (see link below) as saying that, “I can’t lie guys, I’m not a massive Broadway fan. I know, I know. I’m talking about musicals though because I’ve been seeing a couple of plays but I don’t think I’ve seen enough.”
But she did confess seeing and enjoying Gypsy, and that “I did love the role of the mum in it. She has a song when she was like, ‘I wanted to do all of this’ and she’s jealous of her own daughter and she’s really caught up about it. At one bit, she was just a bitch in it, which I could nail.”
Bette Midler was the last to play the iconic role on Broadway, and Adele is a close friend of the veteran star. Adele said that Bette told her she probably couldn’t hack the demands of Broadway: “She was like, ‘You would never be able to keep up with the schedule on Broadway.’ Because I’m so lazy. I’m so notoriously lazy. I would not be able to do matinées and all that. I don’t have the stamina for that.”
Adele’s postponed “Weekends with Adele” Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace Colosseum is about to kick off on 18 November 2022, running through to March 2023.
Also in the chat she speculated on just moving the show from Vegas to New York to try and grab that Tony! “Do I just move the show from Vegas to Broadway and win the Tony?… never say never. If I move to New York, I get bored, I’ll be on that stage in a hot second.”
Do both Adele! Vegas then Broadway. Then London. We need this!
