Lucy Simon, composer of The Secret Garden and sister of Carly Simon, dies

American musical theatre composer Lucy Simon has died at the age of 82.

Simon performed and recorded as a singer and songwriter, and was an acclaimed composer of musicals, including The Secret Garden (1991) and Doctor Zhivago (2011).

Sister of pop singer Carly Simon, she began performing with her sister in 1963 as the Simon Sisters, and enjoyed a multi-album, Grammy Award winning career.

Her 1991 musical The Secret Garden, based on novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, garnered her Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations. Book and lyrics were by Marsha Norman.

She also penned songs for the Off-Broadway show A… My Name Is Alice, and composed the music for 2011 musical Doctor Zhivago, alongside lyricists Michael Korie and Amy Powers. The show had a book by Michael Weller.

The Secret Garden enjoyed a concert performance in London in August 2022 at the London Palladium, starring Hadley Fraser, Mark Feehily, Emma Williams, Isaac Lancel-Watkinson, Darcy Jacobs, Alex Thomas-Smith and Maiya Quansah-Breed.
