West End star Michael Ball will appear in a major London revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s romantic musical Aspects of Love at the Lyric Theatre next year. The double Olivier Award winning musical theatre star returns to the show having appeared in the original production in 1989 as Alex.
This time round Ball will play the part of George, an aristocratic uncle to his original character of Alex.
Speaking with Deadline, Ball said “It’s going to be a completely reimagined show. You won’t recognize it. I’m playing George, and I’m going to sing Love Changes Everything”. The song Love Changes Everything was originally sung by Ball in the role of Alex, and has become a favourite of Ball’s at his concert performances. Ball added “Lloyd Webber might write a new song for the reimagined production.”
In what seems like an impossibly long and successful career Ball has moved from the hot young star of Les Misérables and Aspects of Love, to comic master in shows like Hairspray, to mass murderer in Sweeney Todd and coming full circle to the roles of Javert in Les Misérables and George in Aspects of Love.
Jonathan Kent, who directed Ball and Imelda Staunton in Sweeney Todd will direct a re-imagined revival for the 21st century. with further creatives to be announced. The production is produced by Nica Burns who, according to Deadline, will arrange for Kent, Ball, Lloyd Webber and the show’s songwriters Don Black and Charles Hart to gather for a workshop in London before the end of the year to explore how to structure the piece so that Ball, as George, can perform Love Changes Everything.
In a statement Michael Ball said” Aspects of Love holds a very special place in my heart.I am absolutely delighted to revisit Andrew Lloyd Webber’s glorious score in a re-imagined chamber production in the West End from May next year. I am so happy to be collaborating again with he brilliant director Jonathan Kent who was so inspiring when we worked together on Sweeney Todd.”
Aspect of Love will play a limited 26-week season at the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue from 12 May 2023 with an official opening night on 25 May 2023. Tickets to go on sale soon.
