Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical about Cinderella is to get a new title for Broadway.
Called simply Cinderella for its West End run, which closed at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in London in June 2022, the show will open on Broadway as Bad Cinderella.
Bad Cinderella starts previews on 17 February 2023 at the Imperial Theatre in New York.
The show has music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by David Zippel and a book by Emerald Fennell. The show will be once again directed by Laurence Connor and choreographed by JoAnn M Hunter.
The show will star Linedy Genao (On Your Feet!) as Cinderella, with further cast to be announced soon.
Linedy and Lloyd Webber sang the title song from the show on the Today show in America yesterday, 4 November.
The West End production of Cinderella starred Carrie Hope Fletcher.
Andrew Lloyd Webber said: “I am thrilled and delighted that we are bringing Bad Cinderella to the Imperial Theatre. We have been working hard on a few new songs for our Broadway opening and, with such a brilliant team, led by the spectacular Linedy, I know this is going to be really special.”
Producer Christine Schwarzman said: “We are honored to be introducing this modern Cinderella story to Broadway, and it is a dream come true to work with Andrew Lloyd Webber, especially on a score that sits among his very best. Working with this extraordinary creative team, we’ve created a new Cinderella for today’s audience. It’s so joyful and unique; we can’t wait to share it! I have been dreaming about originating a leading role on Broadway for just about my entire life, but never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine achieving that dream alongside Andrew Lloyd Webber and such an incredible team of collaborators. As a proud Dominican American, I am most excited about this opportunity to represent my community and show the world that fairy tales do come true – and are for everybody. My heart is bursting.”
The musical is produced on Broadway by No Guarantees and Really Useful Group, with Wagner Johnson Productions serving as Executive Producers.
Last month it was announced that Lloyd Webber’s musical The Phantom of the Opera will close on Broadway after 36 years. The show will finish up at the Majestic Theatre on 18 February 2023.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s London production of The Phantom of the Opera continues at Her Majesty’s Theatre.
