Hocus Pocus 2

Stage Spy: Hocus Pocus The Musical set for Broadway – and London?

Can it be true?! A full-scale Broadway musical adaptation of Hocus Pocus is in the works!

People magazine (see link below) is reporting that one of the movie’s original producers, David Kirschner, has discussed bringing the cult film classic to the stage.

He said on a forthcoming episode of the “Art of Kindness” podcast, that “This started before COVID, but now it seems to be back on – and that is that they are building a Broadway version of Hocus Pocus”.

We assume that “they” is Disney Theatrical Productions – producers of successful stage shows including Disney’s The Lion King and Frozen The Musical.

Now is definitely the time for Hocus Pocus The Musical, given that a brand new Disney+ sequel – Hocus Pocus 2 – is released tomorrow, 30 September 2022.

The original 1993 film was directed by Kenny Ortega – him of High School Musical fame – and starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy; and all three are back for the sequel, plus West End star Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”), Doug Jones (“The Shape of Water”), Whitney Peak (“Gossip Girl”), Lilia Buckingham (“Dirt”), Belisa Escobedo (“American Horror Stories”), Tony Hale (“Veep”), Sam Richardson (“The Tomorrow War,” “Good Boys”), Juju Brener (“Vanquish”), Froy Gutierrez (“Teen Wolf”), Taylor Paige Henderson and Nina Kitchen.

Directed by Anne Fletcher (“Dumplin,’” “The Proposal”), it’s written by Jen D’Angelo (“Happy Together,” “Workaholics”) and produced by Lynn Harris (“King Richard,” “The Shallows”), with Adam Shankman (“Disenchanted,” “Hairspray”), Ralph Winter (“Hocus Pocus,” “X-Men” franchise) and David Kirschner (“Hocus Pocus,” “Chucky”) serving as executive producers.

There’s no news on if Hocus Pocus The Musical will travel from Broadway to the West End and London, but judging by other Disney theatrical ventures, this one is sure to travel!
