Broadway producer Jeffrey Seller has confirmed the forthcoming revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
As rumoured, the show will star Josh Groban (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) as Sweeney and Annaleigh Ashford (Sunday in the Park with George, Kinky Boots) as Mrs Lovett, and be directed by Thomas Kail (Hamilton).
Sweeney Todd will play at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, starting performances on 26 February 2023.
Additional casting is yet to be announced, but the wider creative team includes Alex Lacamoire as Music Supervisor – and the show will feature a 26 piece orchestra, Steven Hoggett as choreographer, set design by Mimi Lien, costume design by Emilio Sosa, lighting design by Natasha Katz and sound design by Nevin Steinberg.
Stephen Sondheim and High Wheeler’s acclaimed musical hasn’t been on Broadway since the original 1979 production which scooped 8 Tony Awards at the 1980 awards including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, and Best Direction for Hal Prince. The production starred Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett and Len Cariou as Todd.
