Stage Spy: Two TV classics to be turned into West End shows

Legendary sitcom writer David Renwick has written stage scripts for two of his best known TV series.

BBC comedy One Foot In The Grave, which starred Richard Wilson and Annette Crosbie, and mystery crime drama Jonathan Creek, starring Alan Davies and Caroline Quentin, could both make it to the West End stage.

Speaking on One Foot in the Podcast (see link below), Renwick said that he came up with theatre versions in 2019 after the success of screen-to-stage hit Only Fools And Horses The Musical, which continues to run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London.

Renwick said that: “A few years ago I was approached by a theatrical production company about a One Foot In The Grave transfer and a Jonathan Creek adaptation.”

Sadly both projects are currently on hold, but he went on to say that Alan Davies and Caroline Quentin were up for reprising their original characters in Jonathan Creek. On the hit list for playing Victor Meldrew from One Foot in the Grave were actors such as Harry Enfield, who recently appeared in the West End version of Channel 4’s hit sitcom The Windsors, playing Prince Charles.

We hold out hope, as One Foot in the Grave especially would make a great stage comedy farce.
