What's the story of The Yeoman of the Guard?
The Tower of London is the scene for a tangled web of melancholy and mirth. The arrival of a travelling troupe of performers sparks forbidden romances, fantastical plots and unrequited love.
The unjustly imprisoned Colonel Fairfax has a mutual attraction to the young daughter of the righteous Sergeant Meryll, one of the titular Beefeaters. Phoebe wishes Fairfax be released so they can have the wedding she desires, and enlists the help (and attraction) of Jack Point, a roving performer.
A classic G&S story of chaos and mirth but not necessarily a happy ending.
Who is in the cast of The Yeoman of the Guard?
Acclaimed actor Richard McCabe plays traveling jester Jack Point in the operetta. His stage credits include Cicero in the RSC’s Imperium (Gielgud Theatre), Jim Hacker in Yes, Prime Minister and his Olivier and Tony winning performance as Harold Wilson in The Audience in the West End and on Broadway. TV credits include Anatomy of a Scandal (Netflix), The Pentaverate (Netflix), A Very British Scandal (BBC), Harlots(Hulu-BBC), Wallander(BBC) and Peaky Blinders (BBC). Movie credits include Eye in the Sky, Mindhorn, The Constant Gardener, Master and Commander and Notting Hill.
Richard is joined by Anthony Gregory as Colonel Fairfax, Neal Davies as Sergeant Meryll of the Yeomen, Alexandra Oomens as Elsie Maynard, John Molloy as Wilfred Shadbolt, Heather Lowe as Phoebe Meryll, Steven Page as Sir Richard Cholmondeley, Susan Bickley as Dame Carruthers, Innocent Masuku as Leonard Meryll and Isabelle Peters as Kate.
Who are the creative team of The Yeoman of the Guard?
Visionary Jo Davies returns to the London Coliseum to direct, with designs by acclaimed theatre designer Anthony Ward. G&S veteran Chris Hopkins conducts the ENO Orchestra, with a score that – despite being darker in tone – remains characteristically playful of Arthur Sullivan.
