La Cage Aux Folles, the glamorous and fun-filled musical currently starring John Barrowman at the Playhouse Theatre in London, is to close on 2 January to head to Broadway.
The Laurence Olivier Award-winning musical will see Douglas Hodge, who opened in the production at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2007, return to lead the final performances of the show from 30 November. He will then star in a Broadway production to open in 2010.
Hodge will be joined by Denis Lawson, the actor who first performed the role at the Playhouse theatre.
Terry Johnson’s revival of Jerry Herman’s 1983 Broadway musical comedy has a book by Harvey Fierstein and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, whose other classics include Hello Dolly!, Mame and Mack and Mabel. The score features songs including “I Am What I Am”, “The Best of Times”, “Song on the Sand”, “Masculinity” and the title number.
