First Look: The Phantom of the Opera on Sydney Harbour; plus Phantom London extends

A new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera has hit Sydney in Australia, and it has an extraordinary backdrop.

The new show is staged on a pontoon in Sydney Harbour, with the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge as an impressive scene-stealing backdrop.

It is 14 years since Phantom was last in Sydney, and this supersized production is directed by Simon Phillips and designed by Gabriela Tylesova, and seats an audience of 3,000 a night!

The show stars Joshua Robson as the Phantom, Georgina Hopson as Christine and Callum Francis as Raoul, and is playing on Sydney Harbour until 24 April 2022.

Another Phantom production, this time the revised 2021 London production, is also coming to Australia later this year. Josh Piterman will play the lead in the Sydney Opera House’s Joan Sutherland Theatre.

Phantom extends in London

Even more good Phantom news this week: The original production of The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London is extending its booking period until 1 October 2022.

Currently starring in the show are Killian Donnelly as the Phantom, Lucy St Louis as Christine, and Rhys Whitfield playing Raoul.

Cameron Mackintosh’s sumptuous production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical has music is by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart, and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe.
