A political satire about conformity and the ostracisation of those considered ‘other’ in society, this new production of Arthur Laurents’ and Stephen Sondheim’s 1964 musical will be directed by Matthew Rankcom.
Alex Young, who has just finished a critically acclaimed run playing Amalia Balash in She Loves Me at Sheffield Crucible is set to play the rich and greedy Mayoress Cora Hoover Hooper.
Young’s many theatre roles include Young Sally in Follies (National Theatre); Marge in Promises, Promises (Southwark Playhouse); Brutus in Coriolanus, Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls, Poppy in Standing at the Sky’s Edge, Erma in Anything Goes, Ellie May Chipley in Show Boat, all for Sheffield Crucible; Nellie Forbush in South Pacific and Sally Smith in Me And My Girl, for Chichester Festival Theatre; Brunhilde in I Can’t Sing (London Palladium); and, Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel (ENO/ London Coliseum.
Full casting for the show is to be announced.
Anyone Can Whistle opened on Broadway in the 1963/64 season, where it played for only 9 performances before generating a now-revered original cast recording (featuring Lee Remick, Harry Guardino and Angela Lansbury in her Broadway musical debut), and going on to develop a huge following. Its score has generated several standards, including ‘There Won’t be Trumpets’, ‘Everybody Says Don’t’, ‘With So Little to Be Sure Of’, and the wistful title song.
Set in a fictional town where the government controls everything, even the miracles, this fast paced and off-the-wall musical is as hilarious as it is subversive.
The creative team includes director Matthew Rankcom (They/Them), musical director Natalie Pound (She/Her), choreographer Lisa Stevens (She/Her), set and costume designer Cory Shipp (She/Her), lighting designer Alex Musgrave (He/Him) and assistant director Alex Conder (He/Him). Orchestrations are by Charlie Ingles (He/Him) with original orchestrations by Don Walker (He/Him).
Anyone Can Whistle will run from 1 April 2022 until 7 May 2022 at Southwark Playhouse, London.
