Netflix is a great destination for finding movie versions of classic musicals, and live recordings of stage productions.
Movies turned into musicals
Some of the best movies on Netflix that have now now been turned into stage musicals include Legally Blonde starring Reese Witherspoon – and coming soon to the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park; and Mean Girls starring Lindsay Lohan and Tina Fey – which is coming to London in 2022.
Live recordings of shows
There are also lots of taped recordings of live theatre available on Netflix, with productions including the original Broadway version of Shrek The Musical starring Sutton Foster; Miss Saigon’s 25th anniversary performance from the Prince Edward Theatre in London; Gypsy, live from the Savoy Theatre in London starring Imelda Staunton; the Broadway production of new show Diana The Musical about the life of Diana, Princess of Wales; and the Royal Ballet in London’s sumptuous production of The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House.
Stage musicals turned into films
Also available are stage musicals that have been turned into blockbuster movies, with a wide selection on Netflix including classic 1960’s stage musical Funny Girl starring Barbra Streisand; epic musical Les Miserables the movie, starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, based on the original Les Miserables show at the Sondheim Theatre in London; joyous feel-good movie Mamma Mia! starring Meryl Streep, based on the hit Mamma Mia! musical at the Novello Theatre; Sweeney Todd, the brilliant Stephen Sondheim musical turned into an acclaimed film with Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp; and most recent of all, Netflix Originals The Prom, directed by Ryan Murphy based on the Broadway show and starring James Corden, Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep; and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s take on Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical Tick, Tick… Boom! starring Andrew Garfield.
