About Les Misérables the musical
Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Mis is the story of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his lifelong search for redemption. After serving 17 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving niece, Valjean is given a second chance by a kindly Bishop.
But when he breaks parole, he is hunted for decades by the relentless policeman Javert. When Valjean promises to care for Fantine’s young daughter Cosette, their lives become bound together in a story of love, sacrifice, justice and hope.
