Million Dollar Quartet, the hit musical about a night in December 1956 when four music icons came together to record an album and make music history, returns to London this September. The production is set to open at The Arts at Marble Arch from 4 September.

Hit jukebox musical Million Dollar Quartet has announced its returns to London this September for a strictly limited 12-week run. The musical, a dramatised portrayal of real events, sees music icons Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley come together for a jam session that changed music history.

Bringing the infamous night to life, Million Dollar Quartet is packed with music from the greats, including hits like ‘Blue Suede Shoes,’ ‘Fever,’ ‘Walk the Line,’ ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Great Balls of Fire.’

Stage and screen favourite, Darren Day (Hollyoaks, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Chicago) stars as visionary producer Sam Phillips, who started and ran Sun Records.

This exciting production transfers from the Barn Theatre, following a stellar summer season in Cirencester. On today’s announcement, CEO and Artistic Director of the Barn Theatre Iwan Lewis said, ‘Million Dollar Quartet has blown the roof off the Barn Theatre, and now it’s ready to rock London!

We’re thrilled to be working with Steve Spiegel and TRW Production to bring another Barn Theatre hit to the capital. Sitting next door to Hyde Park, the setting for truly legendary gigs, The Arts at Marble Arch feels like a natural home for the greatest jam session in rock ’n’ roll history.

Enormous credit goes to every member of this company, from our cast and creatives to our crew and production team. Together, they have audiences of every generation dancing in the aisles, night after night. We can’t wait to see London do the same and keep rock ’n’ roll alive!’.

A night for the history books

The events of the musical are based on a real moment in music history when all four musicians all found themselves in a recording studio in Memphis by chance on the night of 4 December 1956. They ended up playing nearly 50 songs, from country and rock to gospel. The sound engineer on the day decided to record the session.

The recordings themselves weren’t released to the public until 1981, after Sun Records was acquired by a new owner who began searching the record label’s catalogue. Eventually, a version with 17 of the tracks was released, though more would be discovered in later years.

That jam session is also the origin of the now infamous image of Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash gathered around a piano.
