Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera is marking a landmark 40th anniversary in the West End with a sensational international cast assembled for a special, limited birthday edition on 9th October at its original London home, His Majesty’s Theatre.
The anniversary company is led by Broadway star Jordan Donica as The Phantom and Beatrice Penny-Touré as Christine Daaé, with Rhys Whitfield returning to the production as Raoul. In a particularly resonant piece of casting, Sierra Boggess (one of Phantom’s most celebrated Christines) returns to the show as the prima donna Carlotta, reuniting with the production at a major milestone in its history.

A homecoming for Sierra Boggess
The casting of Sierra Boggess is one of the anniversary season’s biggest talking points. Closely associated with Phantom’s history, she first played Christine in the Las Vegas production in 2006, before originating the role of Christine in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel Love Never Dies in the West End in 2010, earning an Olivier Award nomination. She went on to play Christine in the acclaimed 25th anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 2011 and later on Broadway. Now she returns to the show that defined her career, this time as Carlotta, opposite Matt Bateman as Piangi.
She is joined by her Love Never Dies co-star Joseph Millson as Monsieur André, with Ian Pirie as Monsieur Firmin, two-time Olivier Award winner Joanna Riding as Madame Giry, and Millie Lyon as Meg Giry. At certain performances, the role of Christine will be played by Colleen Rose Curran.
Leading the anniversary company
Jordan Donica brings a notable Phantom connection of his own, having made his Broadway debut in the show as Raoul, a role he played across 2016–17 and again in 2022. His other credits include a Tony-nominated turn as Sir Lancelot in Lincoln Center Theater’s Camelot, Freddy in My Fair Lady, and Lafayette/Jefferson in the first US national tour of Hamilton.
Beatrice Penny-Touré, who made her professional and West End debut in Phantom before taking on Christine, has since appeared as Cosette in the 40th anniversary and arena tour of Les Misérables, as well as in The Book of Mormon and Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends.
Producer Cameron Mackintosh said this was “certainly going to be one of the finest casts ever of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beloved musical.” He reflected that only two musicals in history have run continuously to packed houses for over 40 years, Phantom and Les Misérables, adding that he was “very proud to be the producer of them both.” He also pointed to “the extraordinary resurgence of interest from young audiences all over the world,” with Lloyd Webber’s iconic score “now being excitedly discovered by new generations.”
