Based on the inspiring true story of activist organisation LGSM, Pride follows a group of lesbian and gay activists who decided to join the miners’ strike campaign of 1984. The unlikely union of two oppressed, but startlingly different communities had more of an impact than anyone could have imagined.
The new musical is based on the 2014 film of the same name from Matthew Warchus and Stephen Beresford. The duo reunites for this production and head up a cast that includes Samuel Barnett, Lewis Cornay, Matthew Durkan and more.
Pride arrives at the National Theatre for its world premiere following a sold-out preview run in Cardiff.

What to expect from Pride
The award-winning film was directed by Matthew Warchus (Matilda the Musical) and written by Stephen Beresford (The Last of the Haussmans). The duo reunite for the musical, with Warchus again directing, and Beresford writing the book and lyrics.
Original music by Christopher Nightingale (A Christmas Carol), Josh Cohen (Sylvia) and DJ Walde (Sylvia) pulls inspiration from protest anthems, pop, rock, disco and, of course, the Welsh choral tradition. Music played a big role in the film, so it’s no surprise the musical would aim to include similar tones.
The sold-out preview run at Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre garnered an overwhelmingly positive response from audiences, and the run at the National has been generating just as much buzz.
