Book now for the world premiere of James Graham’s The Standard of Living, starring Olivier Award winner Rory Kinnear as economist John Maynard Keynes.
The Standard of Living in London
One of the most anticipated new plays of the year, The Standard of Living receives its world premiere in the West End this autumn.
Written by three-time Olivier Award winner James Graham, the playwright behind Dear England, Punch and the television hit Sherwood, it tells the story of John Maynard Keynes, one of the twentieth century’s greatest thinkers, who dared to imagine a different kind of future and in doing so helped reshape the Western world after the First World War.
Rory Kinnear and Natalia Osipova star
Rory Kinnear (Hamlet, Skyfall, The Diplomat) leads the company as Keynes, the radical economist and member of the influential Bloomsbury Group who became the driving force behind arts funding in Britain.
Opposite him, Royal Ballet Principal Natalia Osipova, who is one of the most celebrated dancers of her generation, makes her West End debut as Lydia Lopokova, the Ballets Russes soloist who fell in love with and married Keynes.
Directed by Nicholas Hytner, former Director of the National Theatre and co-founder of the Bridge Theatre, with set design by Olivier Award winner Bob Crowley, this is a striking new play alive with music, dance, desire and debate. It’s a thrilling, funny and deeply moving portrait of a man who dared to imagine something better.
Book The Standard of Living tickets
The Standard of Living plays a strictly limited 12-week engagement at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, with opening night on 29 September, and a final performance on 12 December 2026. Demand is expected to be high and early booking is recommended.
Husband to ballerina Lydia Lopokova, lover to the painter Duncan Grant, and friend to Virginia Woolf, John Maynard Keynes moves between the corridors of power in Whitehall and the intoxicating freedom of a radical circle of artists, writers and lovers who are all determined to live differently.
But as markets crash, old systems crumble and Britain teeters on the edge of chaos, one question begins to consume him: what is a good life? Can art, love and human connection reshape the future before it’s too late, or is the world too addicted to wealth and power to change?
Alive with music, dance, desire and debate, The Standard of Living tells the little-known story of the radical thinker who built a new and fairer financial model in the aftermath of the First World War, and who made it possible for theatre and art of all kinds to flourish in Britain. It is a thrilling, funny and deeply moving portrait of a man who dared to imagine something better.
A landmark reunion
The Standard of Living reunites James Graham and Nicholas Hytner, a partnership that began in 2012 when Hytner commissioned Graham’s breakout hit This House for the National Theatre. It also marks a reunion between Hytner and Rory Kinnear, who have collaborated repeatedly across some of the most acclaimed productions of recent years. With Graham fresh from his Olivier Award win for Punch and a string of stage and screen successes, this is one of the most eagerly awaited new plays of the West End season.
