Ian McEwan’s Masterpiece Atonement set for World Premiere stage adaptation in 2026
One of the most anticipated literary adaptations in recent years has been confirmed as the centrepiece of Chichester Festival Theatre’s 2026 season. Ian McEwan’s iconic novel Atonement will receive its world premiere stage debut next summer.
Directed by Adam Penford and adapted by Academy Award-winner Christopher Hampton, the production is already expected to attract significant industry attention, with speculation of a potential West End transfer.
Long considered one of the 100 greatest novels of the past century, the story was famously adapted into a 2007 film starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy.
For many, the name Atonement immediately conjures images of that film — Keira Knightley in the green dress, the sweeping Dunkirk sequence, and the heartbreaking chemistry between her and McAvoy. But before it became a cinematic touchstone, it was a Booker Prize-shortlisted novel that has remained a fixture on “Greatest Books of the Century” lists.
This epic tale of a single, life-altering mistake comes to the Festival Theatre from 29 May to 20 June 2026.
The play has been adapted by Christopher Hampton, whose stage and screen credits include Les Liaisons Dangereuses and his Oscar-winning screenplay for The Father. A revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses is set to open at the National Theatre next month starring Lesley Manville, Aidan Turner and Monica Barbaro.
Adam Penford, Artistic Director of Nottingham Playhouse, will direct. He returns to Chichester following his 2023 production of The Sound of Music, and most recently helmed James Graham’s Punch, which transferred to both the West End and Broadway.
The creative team also includes designer Anthony Ward, movement and intimacy director Ben Wright, and composer Alexandra Faye Braithwaite.
From iconic novel to the stage
First published in 2001 to widespread acclaim, Atonement quickly established itself as a modern classic. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and named by Time and The Guardian as one of the 100 greatest novels of the past century.
The story, a sweeping epic of guilt and the quest for redemption, begins during the “blazing summer of 1935” on an English country estate. It follows 13-year-old Briony Tallis, a girl with a vivid imagination and a “dim understanding” of the adult world. After witnessing a passionate encounter between her sister Cecilia and Robbie, the son of the family’s housekeeper, Briony makes a devastating accusation that will alter their lives forever.
The narrative spans decades: from the pre-war elegance of the 1930s to the chaos of the Second World War and into the present day.
A major season for Chichester
Atonement forms part of Chichester Festival Theatre’s newly announced Festival 2026 season, which runs from March to October and includes eight world premieres alongside a new production of My Fair Lady and a 1990s-set A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
With six previous Chichester productions currently playing in London or on national tour, the venue has become an established launchpad for the West End. Given the global reputation of McEwan’s novel and the high-profile creative team attached, Atonement is likely to be closely watched when it premieres next summer.
