Ian McEwan’s masterpiece novel Atonement is finally coming to the stage. Before it was a multi-award-winning film starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, it was a “dazzling masterpiece” of modern literature, shortlisted for the Booker Prize and named one of the 100 greatest novels of the last century.

Now, Academy Award-winner Christopher Hampton (Les Liaisons Dangereuses) adapts this sweeping epic for a world premiere production directed by Adam Penford (Punch).

The Story: A Single Lie, A Lifetime of Regret

On an English country estate during the “blazing summer of 1935,” 13-year-old Briony Tallis witnesses a passionate scene between her elder sister Cecilia and Robbie, the son of the family’s housekeeper.

With only a “dim understanding” of adult emotions and a “disastrous desire for drama,” Briony makes an accusation that will fatally alter the lives of everyone involved. The story spans from the 1930s, through the chaos of the Second World War, to the present day in a sweeping epic of guilt and the quest for redemption.
