The super-producer is moving on from the 007 Amazon deal and a difficult year to a feelgood coming-of-age musical
… “Broccoli’s enthusiasm is for Sing Street, a stage adaptation she is producing of the hit John Carney musical film of the same name. The coming-of-age story was up for a Golden Globe in 2016, but much more importantly stole hearts the world over, making $13.6 million from a $4 million budget. It tells of 15-year-old Conor, who starts a band at school to impress Raphina, and takes audiences on a heady trip through the ride that is teenage hormones: love, lust, a loss of dignity. That was the film, and the show wants to bottle the same feeling — it wants to be a good time, something helped no end by the story being set in the vibrant mid-1980s.
“I just love this show,” says Broccoli, who turned 65 in June, but keeps the enthusiasm of a teenager. “It’s always a challenge because you do not want to do exactly what the film did as then there’d be no point in people coming to see it. But this show is just joyful and we could all use a bit of joy right now.”…
“Sing Street is a comeback of sorts, one she is relishing. “Oh, I am around every day,” she says, clearly thrilled. “These young people are extraordinary and we can all relate to these characters — we all remember feeling awkward and trying to find your way, what it was like to be young.” She laughs knowingly — hers has been a rich life. “But also it’s that feeling of being in a theatre experiencing something magical — because community is so important. We have to remember what it was like”.”
