London’s National Theatre has announced that Bacchae will take the stage at the Olivier Theatre in September 2025.
Directed by Indhu Rubasingham (The Father and the Assassin), the National Theatre’s new artistic director, Bacchae is written by Nima Taleghani (Heartstopper), based on the ancient Greek play celebrating the God of theatre.
As part of Rubasingham‘s first season at the National, Bacchae will play the Olivier Theatre of the National Theatre from 13 September to 1 November 2025.
Promising to be infused with anarchic energy, the production will be a mix of spoken word and rhyme, with choreography by ZooNation’s Kate Prince, and an original score by DJ Walde.
The production will star James McArdle (Mare of Easttown), Clare Perkins (EastEnders) and Ukweli Roach (Blindspot), along with Arethajay McEwen, Ebony Clarke, Fi Silverthorn, Jessey Stol, Kate Ivory Jordan, Melanie Joyce Bermudez, Sam Jenkins Shaw, and Simon Startin.

In the show, the Bacchae aren’t standing on the sidelines whilst the men have all the fun. These fangirls may be a pack but they’re not animals… They are stage-storming powerhouses ready to cause chaos in Thebes!
Also joining Indhu Rubasingham in the creative team is set and costume design by Robert Jones, lighting design by Oliver Fenwick, sound design by Ben and Max Ringham, fight director Kate Waters, casting by Bryony Jarvis-Taylor CDG and Martin Poile CDG, voice and dialect coach Hazel Holder, associate director Hannah Hauer-King, associate set and costume designer Natalie Johnson, and assistant choreographer Ajani Johnson-Goffe.
The National Theatre has also confirmed that Bacchae will be filmed for a future streaming release on National Theatre at Home.
The announcement about Bacchae is part of the National Theatre’s new 2025 to 2027 season announcement.
Bacchae is running at the National Theatre from 13 September to 1 November 2025.
