The director of the big-budget Hollywood movie version of Wicked is set to direct another much-loved musical for the screen.

Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) will direct a new movie version of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, for Amazon Studios.

According to Deadline, Chu and producing partner Scott Sanders (In The Heights, The Color Purple) will develop the musical movie, with Sanders and Mara Jacobs producing for SGS Pictures, and Lance Johnson for Chu’s Electric Somewhere.

The screenplay for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will be by Daniel Goldfarb (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is about to embark on a major new UK and Ireland tour, produced by Lloyd Webber’s long-term producing partner Michael Harrison. The tour kicks off this Christmas in Edinburgh starring Donny Osmond as Pharaoh, and will play venues including London Wimbledon – see all dates here.

The cast also includes Joe McElderry as Pharaoh at selected dates, and West End stars Christina Bianco (The Wizard of Oz) as the Narrator, and Adam Filipe (Titanic The Musical, Les Misérables) as Joseph.

Last night at London’s Royal Festival Hall, the European premiere of Jon M. Chu’s Wicked took place. The movie officially opens on 22 November, and stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum.
