The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced full casting for its 2025 production of Hamlet, directed by Rupert Goold.

Hamlet is playing at the RSC’s Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from 8 February to 29 March 2025.

The production is described as “high concept” by award-winning director Rupert Goold (Dear England, Patriots, Tammy Faye, Judy), who is artistic director of the Almeida Theatre.

Already announced is stage and screen star Jared Harris (Chernobyl, The Crown, Mad Men), who is returning to the RSC after 34 years to play Claudius in the production.

Harris first worked at the RSC in 1989 in Ron Daniels’ production of Hamlet starring Mark Rylance. He has also played the title role in Hamlet at the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival in 2001.

Joining Jared Harris in the cast are previously announced Luke Thallon (Cold War, Patriots) as Hamlet; Nancy Carroll (The Cabinet Minister, After The Dance) as Gertrude; Anton Lesser (Endeavour, Game of Thrones, Wolf Hall) as the Ghost and the Player King; Elliot Levey (Patriots, Giant, Cabaret) as Polonius; Kel Matsena (Dear England) as Horatio; Lewis Shepherd (Dear England) as Laertes; and Nia Towle (A View From The Bridge) as Ophelia.

The cast also features Chase Brown as Rosencrantz, Tadeo Martinez as Guildenstern, Miranda Colchester as Second Player, David Mara as Voltemand, Evan McCabe as Francisco, Jack Myers as Marcellus, James Sobol Kelly as Cornelius / Priest, Jessica Temple as Messenger / Ensemble, and Joe Usher as Barnardo / Fortinbras.

The ensemble includes Shailan Gohil, Sophie McIntosh and Ed Mitchell.

Rehearsals started in December.

Joining Rupert Goold in the creative team are Es Devlin as Set Designer, Evie Gurney as Costume Designer, Jack Knowles as Lighting Designer, Adam Cork as Composer and Sound Designer, Hannes Langolf as Movement Director, Akhila Krishnan as Video Designer, and Charlotte Sutton CDG as Casting Director.

Rupert Goold recently directed the shortl-ived Broadway production of Elton John and James Graham musical Tammy Faye. Goold’s acclaimed production of Dear England by James Graham is returning to London next year, playing the National Theatre from 10 March to 24 May 2025.

Hamlet is running at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from 8 February to 29 March 2025.
