Here & Now – The Steps Musical has announced lead casting, ahead of its world premiere at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham this autumn.
UK pop stars Steps have turned their hit songs into a new musical, premiering at the Alexandra theatre in Birmingham, running from 9 to 24 November 2024.
The show will star Rebecca Lock (Elf The Musical, School of Rock) as Caz McGovern, Hiba Elchikhe (The Time Traveller’s Wife, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie) as Neeta Thakkar, Sharlene Hector (Standing At The Sky’s Edge, A Strange Loop) as Vel King and Blake Patrick Anderson (Emojiland, Rent) as Robbie Davies.
Further casting is to be announced.
Here & Now is directed by Rachel Kavanaugh (The Great British Bake Off Musical, Sleuth UK Tour), with choreography by Olivier Award winner Matt Cole (The Baker’s Wife, Disney’s Newsies), and the musical has an original book by Shaun Kitchener (Hollyoaks).
The story of Here & Now centres on seaside superstore Better Best Bargains, where it’s Friday night, the vibe is right, and everyone’s dancing in the aisles. But when Caz discovers the shelves are stocked with lies and betrayal, the summer of love she and her friends dreamed of suddenly feels like a tragedy. Have they all lost their chance of a ‘happy ever after’? Or does love have other plans in store…
Here & Now – The Steps Musical will feature all of Steps’ hit songs, including Tragedy/Heartbeat, Stomp, One For Sorrow, Better Best Forgotten, 5,6,7,8, Last Thing On My Mind, Love’s Got A Hold Of My Heart, Chain Reaction, and many more.
The show is produced by music industry Svengali Pete Waterman (I Should Be So Lucky The Musical) of Stock, Aitken & Waterman fame, and ROYO (Now That’s What I Call A Musical, 13 Going on 30 The Musical, The Cher Show).
Other creatives attached to the show include set design by Tom Rogers, costume design by Gabriella Slade, lighting design by Howard Hudson, sound design by Adam Fisher, wigs, hair and makeup design by Sam Cox, casting by Will Burton for Grindrod Burton Casting, associate direction by Matt Hassall, associate choreography by Jane McMurtrie with associate sound design by Ollie Durrant.
Steps, comprising of Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Lee Latchford-Evans and Lisa Scott-Lee, are the UK’s most successful mixed sex pop group of all time, with 14 top five singles, 4 number one albums, 22 million record sales, 500 million streams & 11 sold-out national arena tours under their belts. Their 2017 comeback tour sold out all 300,000 tickets, making it one of the biggest pop tours of the year.
Faye Tozer is currently starring in the UK & Ireland tour of 101 Dalmatians The Musical.
In addition to Here & Now’s Birmingham premiere, the show is also headed to the West End, although no further details on timing or venues have been announced.
