Dolly: An Original Musical in New York
This original new musical features a book by Dolly herself with Maria S. Schlatter, and all of the classic Dolly Parton songs you know and love – plus some new songs written specially by Dolly for the show. It charts the incredible life of one of the greatest icons in music history, and the highs and lows of Dolly’s career, from humble beginnings to mega superstardom.
“I lived my whole life to see this show on stage. I’ve written many original songs for the show and included all your favorites in it as well. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll clap, you’ll stomp, it truly is a Grand Ol’ Opera. Pun and fun intended. Don’t miss it!”

Cast and creative highlights
Dolly: An Original Musical had a pre-Broadway tryout at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Belmont University in Nashville, TN from between July and August 2025.
The Broadway show’s lead cast was handpicked by Dolly herself. It stars Katie Rose Clarke (Wicked, Miss Saigon) as Dolly Parton. Clarke reprises her performance as Dolly Parton from the show’s acclaimed Nashville premiere, and is joined by Carrie St. Louis as Dolly, and Norah Nunes as Little Dolly.
This comes alongside Grammy nominee John Behlmann as Dolly’s husband Carl Dean, and Tony winner Gabriel Ebert as Porter Wagoner.
Dolly: An Original Musical will be directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher (The King & I, South Pacific).
Dolly’s 81st birthday
Dolly: A True Original Musical features some of Parton’s best-loved hits, including “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “9 to 5,” alongside new songs written especially for the show.
Previews for the musical begin on 7 December 2026, with opening night falling on 19 January 2027 – what would have been Dolly Parton’s 81st birthday. In honour of her lifelong commitment to inspiring children, the producers have also partnered with the New York City Department of Education to make 30,000 free tickets available to public school students during the show’s first year on Broadway.

Dolly: A True Original Musical is the story only Dolly Parton could have told, in her own words and through the songs that shaped her life. From the top of the Smoky Mountains to the top of the world, the show captures how she dreamed, dared, stumbled and soared, taking audiences inside her life in the spotlight and the music that carried her there. It features beloved hits including “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “9 to 5,” alongside new songs Parton wrote especially for the production.
The musical features music by Parton, a book by Parton and two-time Emmy winner Maria S. Schlatter, and is directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher. It had its world premiere in Nashville, Tennessee in summer 2025, where the sold-out engagement became the most successful production in the history of Belmont University’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts and made international headlines.
For the Broadway transfer, Dolly Parton personally handpicked her leading cast: Katie Rose Clarke reprises her acclaimed performance as ‘Dolly Parton’ from the Nashville production, with Carrie St. Louis as the ambitious young singer-songwriter ‘Dolly’, Norah Nunes — a finalist from the show’s “Search for Dolly” open casting call — as ‘Little Dolly’, John Behlmann as Dolly’s husband of almost 60 years ‘Carl Dean’, and Gabriel Ebert as the country star who introduced her to national television audiences, ‘Porter Wagoner’.
