Acclaimed director Robert Icke to direct his new adaptation of Sophocles’ Oedipus in the West End.
Oedipus will star Mark Strong (A View From the Bridge, The Kingsman) as Oedipus and Lesley Manville (Flowers for Mrs Harris, The Crown, Phantom Thread) as Jocasta, and play the Wyndham’s Theatre from 4 October 2024.
Icke’s production was originally presented in Dutch at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam and at the Edinburgh International Festival.
This production is presented in the West End by Sonia Friedman Productions (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child).
The adaptation is set against the backdrop of election night: the polls predict a landslide victory, and everything is about to change for Oedipus in this epic tragedy transformed into an essential, explosive human thriller.
Robert Icke (Oresteia,1984, The Doctor) is also directing another of his new adaptations in the West End this season, with Ian McKellen starring in Player Kings, based on Shakespeare’s Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, at the Noel Coward Theatre, from 1 April to 22 June 2024.
Also earlier today, The Old Vic theatre in London announced that they too would be staging a new adaptation of Oedipus, this time starring Oscar-winner Rami Malek and Olivier Award-winner Indira Varma, in an adaptation by Ella Hickson for the The Old Vic theatre in January 2025.
Currently playing at the Wyndham’s Theatre is comedy The Unfriend starring Lee Mack, to 9 March 2024; followed by Long Day’s Journey Into Night starring Brian Cox, from 19 March to 8 June 2024; and musical Next to Normal starring Caissie Levy, from 18 June to 21 September 2024.
Oedipus is playing at the Wyndham’s Theatre from 4 October 2024.
