Kim’s Convenience writer Ins Choi: ‘I want a broad audience to see Asians as normal people’
The play about the offbeat dynamics of a Korean-Canadian family became a hit Netflix sitcom and is newly revived in London
“I want to put work out there that my parents can see,” says Canadian actor-playwright Ins Choi in his dressing room in north London’s Park Theatre. “I want a broad, intergenerational audience to see Asians as normal people that have joy, that laugh, cry, that aren’t perfect, that have faults.”
He is talking about Kim’s Convenience, his 2011 play turned popular Netflix sitcom, which follows a Korean immigrant family who run a Toronto store and is now playing on the London stage.
