Alan Cumming is set to direct the Off-Broadway premiere of Jacob Storms’ latest solo play, Tennessee Rising: The Dawn of Tennessee Williams.
Tennessee Rising delves into the formative years of the A Streetcar Named Desire writer, covering the period from 1939 to 1945 as the unknown writer Tom Williams transforms into the renowned Southern Gothic playwright. An earlier version of the play won the United Solo Award at the 2017 United Solo Festival, and was later showcased at the Tennessee Williams Festival St. Louis. The current iteration was scheduled to premiere in March 2020 at the Beaubourg Theatre in New Orleans, but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jacob Storms is best known for his recurring role (Serge) on Steven Soderbergh & Gregory Jacobs’ Amazon Original Series, Red Oaks.
Cumming’s is a Tony and Olivier Award winning actor, writer, comedian and activist with a career spanning four decades in film, TV and theatre. His recent TV roles include Schmigadoon, The Good Fight, Briarpatch and animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park. On the stage he is known for Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs, Cabaret, Accidental Death of an Anarchist and Macbeth.
Tennessee Rising runs from 19 February 2023 until 2 April 2023 at AMT Theater (354 West 45th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues).
