1536 transfers to the Ambassadors Theatre for a limited run, playing from 2 May until 1 August 2026, following a sold out run at the Almeida Theatre last year.

The original cast, including Liv Hill (Film Club, Miss Austen), Siena Kelly (Adult Material, A Doll’s House) and Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education, The Seagull) reprise their roles in this bold and darkly funny drama.

What to Expect

Set in Tudor England, the play follows three women in rural Essex who gather to discuss rumours of the clash between King Henry VIII and Queen Anne Boleyn. As the royal scandal unfolds, the women begin to see dangerous echoes of the drama in their own lives, exploring themes of female friendship and systemic violence.

The cast and creatives of 1536

1536 stars Liv Hill as Jane, Siena Kelly as Anna and Tanya Reynolds as Mariella, all of whom reprise their original roles from the Almeida production last year.

Rounding out the cast are Oliver Johnstone (All My Sons) as Richard and George Kemp (Bridgerton) as William. The company is completed by understudies Harry Bradley (Richard/William), Saroja-Lily Ratnavel (Jane/Mariella), and Sydney Spencer (Anna).

Directed by Lyndsey Turner (Chimerica), the creative team also includes set and costume design by Max Jones, lighting by Jack Knowles and sound by Tingying Dong.

An award-winning debut

1536 is the debut play of Ava Pickett, who won the 2024 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for her work. Pickett also won the 2026 Critics’ Circle Theatre Award and the 2026 London Standard Theatre Award for Most Promising Playwright. The play was also nominated for Best New Play at the 2026 Olivier Awards.
