Olivier and Tony Award-winning playwright and director Richard Nelson (Farewell to the Theatre, Goodnight Children Everywhere) has been announced as the director of his new play Springwood at Hampstead Theatre in London.
Hollywood star Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada) was originally announced as the director, but has had to pull out of the production due to a scheduling conflict.
Tucci was to have made his London stage directing debut with the play, which is running at Hampstead Theatre from 19 June to 25 July 2026.
Springwood is based on Richard Nelson’s screenplay for the film ‘Hyde Park on Hudson’, which starred Bill Murray and Laura Linney.
Billed as witty and poignant, Springwood pulls back the curtain on a pivotal meeting in 1939 between King George VI and President Roosevelt.
The play is set at a country house in 1939, where the fate of nations hangs in the balance. King George VI’s single opportunity to convince President Roosevelt to support his country in impending war is seemingly dependent on whether he and his wife can navigate a public picnic with the decorum and dignity expected of royalty. The weekend marks the first ever visit of a British monarch to the United States – can the “special relationship” survive a menu of hot dogs and beer?
