A major new UK revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has found its Sweeney!

The coveted musical theatre role will be played by West End and Broadway star Ramin Karimloo (The Phantom of the Opera, A Face in the Crowd, Love Never Dies) as Sweeney.

Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s 12-time Tony Award-winning musical will run at the Birmingham Rep in Birmingham from 4 July to 9 August 2026.

Our Take: We have waited a long time for Ramin Karimloo to take on Sondheim’s greatest male role – and it’s a huge coup for the Birmingham Rep to get him. Everyone will be watching to see if this production will transfer to the West End.

“I’ve long known there would be a time and a place to step into the world of Stephen Sondheim and to explore the complexity of Benjamin Barker. After meeting with Joe Murphy and the team at Birmingham Rep, it was immediately clear this was the right moment and the right company to take that journey with.” – Ramin Karimloo

Further casting for Sweeney Todd is to be announced.

Sweeney Todd will be directed by The Rep’s artistic director Joe Murphy.
