The new musical version of hit movie Crazy Rich Asians took a step closer to the stage this month, as a workshop for the new show was held in New York.
Crazy Rich Asians The Musical is being produced by Warner Bros Theatre Ventures (Beetlejuice The Musical), and overseen by the blockbuster movie’s original director, Jon M. Chu.
Jon M. Chu also directed the cinema box-office smash-hit Wicked and Wicked: For Good.
Crazy Rich Asians The Musical has songs by Tony Award-nominated composer Helen Park (KPOP) and lyricists Tat Tong and Amanda Green (Hands On A Hardbody). The book is by Leah Nanako Winkler (Schmigadoon!) based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling book and the Warner Bros movie.
The week-long development workshop took place at New 42 Studios in New York, and featured a cast including Helen J. Shen (Maybe Happy Ending) as Rachel Chu, Liam Oh (Boots) as Nick Young, Tony Award-winner Ruthie Ann Miles (Here Lies Love) as Eleanor Young, and Alyssa Joy Fox (Wicked) as Astrid.
The workshop cast also included Daniel K. Isaac, Jasmine Forsberg, Helen J. Shen, Liam Oh, Ryo Kamibayashi, Conrad Ricamora, Deborah S. Craig, Amy Keum, Maria-Christina Oliveras, Anne Fraser Thomas, Claire Kwon, Amanda Morton, Mikayla Renfrow, and Kelvin Moon Loh.
Kevin Kwan wrote on Instagram that: “Something remarkable happened last week. Some of the most talented actors on Broadway came together and performed “Crazy Rich Asians: The Musical.” This 29 Hour Read was the first time we heard the full show by the brilliant creative team… It was absolutely euphoric to hear these amazing actors bring the characters alive, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room, and it was truly a dream come true. I cannot wait for everyone to experience this on Broadway!!!”
The original Crazy Rich Asians movie was released in 2018, starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh.
Alongside current hits Wicked and Wicked: For Good, other Jon M. Chu movie musicals in the pipeline include directing a new movie version of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s classic Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for Amazon.
