Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical Dreamgirls is returning to New York in autumn 2026.

The major new production will be directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown, and produced by Sonia Friedman, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and LaChanze Productions.

Dreamgirls has a book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger.

Casting is to be announced. The central trio of ‘The Dreams’ will be cast from a worldwide talent search, with further details announced soon. Auditions will take place in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, London, Toronto, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Rome and Paris.

Dreamgirls first premiered on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre in 1981, directed by Michael Bennett, and winning six Tony Awards. The production launched the career of the show’s star Jennifer Holliday.

A smash-hit 2006 movie version of the musical starred Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy.

It took over 30 years for Dreamgirls to make it to the West End, finally opening at the Savoy Theatre in London in 2016, produced by Sonia Friedman.

The London production was directed by Casey Nicolaw (Hercules) and starred Amber Riley, Liisi LaFontaine, Ibinabo Jack, Joe Aaron Reid and Adam J Bernard. Marisha Wallace also joined the show during the run. The show picked up two 2017 Olivier Awards, incuding Best Actress in a Musical for Amber Riley.

Songs from the show include “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” “One Night Only,” and the title anthem “Dreamgirls.”

Dreamgirls is widely rumoured to be based on the story of Diana Ross and the Surpemes.
