A highlight of this year’s Hollywood Bowl summer season is their star-studded production of Jesus Christ Superstar led by Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award-winner Cynthia Erivo (Wicked, Dracula) as Jesus, and Grammy-nominated star Adam Lambert (Cabaret) as Judas Iscariot.

Joining Erivo and Lambert were John Stamos, who replaced Josh Gad as King Herod, Phillipa Soo as Mary Magdalene, Milo Manheim as Peter, Raúl Esparza as Pontius Pilate, Brian Justin Crum as Annas, Tyrone Huntley as Simon, and Zachary James as Caiaphas.

The Ensemble featured Natalie Babbitt Taylor, Isaiah Bailey, LJ Benet, Damian Caraballo, Cooper Clack, Jennifer Florentino, Sara Gomez, Emily Goglia, Summer Nicole Greer, Ayana Haviv, Christopher Hernandez, Juliet Johnson, Oyoyo Joi, John Krause, Gracie Laboy, Brandon Leffler, John E. Lucas, Nathan Madden, Morgan Marcell, L.T. Martinez, Mariah Meshae, Clinton Roane, Brad Sharp, Krystle Rose’ Simmons, Joey Taranto, Ian Ward, and Suzanne Waters.

In the wider creative team were conductor and musical director, Stephen Oremus; scenic designer, Jason Ardizzone-West; costume designer, Emilio Sosa; projection designer, Peter Nigrini; lighting designer, Tyler Glover; lighting designer, Tyler Lambert-Perkins; sound designer, Jonathan Burke; Hair, Wig and Makeup Designer, Brandi Strona; associate director, Marc Tumminelli; associate choreographer, Christopher Hernandez; associate musical director & associate conductor, Jared Stein; props coordinator, Kirk Graves; costume supervisor, Kim DeShazo; and production stage manager, Meredith J. Greenburg. Casting was by The Telsey Office, and the show was produced in association with Neil Meron and Robert Greenblatt.

Jesus Christ Superstar was originally conceived as a 1970 concept album, and was first performed at the Hollywood Bowl way back in 1971, the same year it premiered on Broadway. In the West End, the show opened at the Palace Theatre in London in 1972.

Adam Lambert’s casting as Judas follows his six-month run as the Emcee in Rebecca Frecknall’s production of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club on Broadway.

Cynthia Erivo is also returning to the West End next year, starring in Kip Williams’ production of Dracula at the Noel Coward Theatre in London. Cynthia’s performance in the second Wicked movie, Wicked: For Good, can be seen from 21 November 2025.

Other new productions of Jesus Christ Superstar include the Watermill Theatre in Newbury’s production, which is now playing until 21 September 2025.
