Olivier Award-winning and Tony-nominated theatre company Francesca Moody Productions (FMP) has entered a two-year first-look deal with Wells Street Films, the production company founded by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Under the agreement, Wells Street Films will have the first opportunity to adapt FMP’s theatrical productions for television. Wells Street Films is currently in a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
The collaboration between Waller-Bridge and Francesca Moody dates back to the highly acclaimed stage production of Fleabag, directed by Vicky Jones. Premiering at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013, the play became a global phenomenon, with Moody producing its international runs, including a West End engagement at Wyndham’s Theatre. The play was also filmed for NT Live and screened in cinemas worldwide before evolving into the multi-award-winning television series Fleabag, which won six Emmys, three BAFTAs, and three Golden Globes over two seasons.
FMP has a strong track record of developing theatrical productions that transition successfully to screen. In addition to Fleabag, the company produced Baby Reindeer, which became a hit Netflix series, winning six Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes.
Currently, FMP’s theatrical slate includes Weather Girl, written by Brian Watkins and directed by Tyne Rafaeli, starring Julia McDermott. The production, a sell-out success at the 2024 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, will transfer to Soho Theatre from 5 March to 5 April 2025. Other upcoming projects include Feeling Afraid As If Something Terrible is Going to Happen, touring internationally following its runs at the Edinburgh Fringe and Bush Theatre, and the 20th-anniversary production of Tim Crouch’s An Oak Tree at the Young Vic from 6 May, featuring a rotating cast of guest actors including Sopễ́ Dìrísù, Michelle Terry, Luke Thompson, Russell Tovey, and Indira Varma.
Wells Street Films, co-founded by Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins in 2019, is currently developing multiple projects under its overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, including a Tomb Raider series and Sign Here.
Francesca Moody said, “This marks an evolution for FMP as we establish ourselves as a home for storytelling and expand the parameters of the work we make. We’re native to theatre, but we also know first-hand how different mediums can feed the other, so this is an incredible opportunity for us to build on our track record and take a more holistic approach to developing shows.”
Phoebe Waller-Bridge echoed the sentiment, saying, “Francesca Moody has an incredible talent for spotting and developing new writers from theatre and shares our belief that much of the most original work we see on our televisions comes from writers who honed their skill writing for the stage. Years after collaborating on Fleabag, we can’t wait to work together again!”
