The Almeida Theatre’s acclaimed production of The Years is transferring into the West End, to play at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London.
Based on Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux’s novel Les Années, The Years has been adapted and directed by Internationaal Theater Amsterdam’s new Artistic Director Eline Arbo.
The Years will run at the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre in London from 24 January to 19 April 2025.
The production got a rapturous response from London’s theatre critics when it opened in August 2024 at the Almeida, with five stars from the Independent, Financial Times, i News, The Stage and the Guardian.
The cast of the Almeida production will revive their roles for the West End run, including Deborah Findlay (The Split, Orlando), Romola Garai (Vigil), Gina McKee (Dear England, Notting Hill), Anjli Mohindra (Noises Off) and Harmony Rose-Bremner (Hamnet).
Romola Garai will appear in the show until 8 March, with further casting to be announced.
In The Years, five different actors bring one woman’s personal and political story to life, set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing post-war Europe.
Joining Eline Arbo in the creative team are Music Supervisor and Sound Designer Thijs van Vuure, Set Designer Juul Dekker, Lighting Designer Varja Klosse, Costume Designer Rebekka Wörmann, and Casting Director Amy Ball CDG. The play has an English version by Stephanie Bain.
The original production and adaptation of The Years was first produced as De jaren by Het Nationale Theater in The Hague, Netherlands in 2022; and the play’s UK premiere at the Almeida Theatre ran from 27 July 2024 until 31 August 2024.
The production was widely praised by the critics, with five-star reviews from a number of publications including The Independent (“A unique, profoundly moving experience”), the Financial Times (“Annie Ernaux’s book takes on a visceral new life”), i News (“People may have fainted – but this is magnificent”), The Stage (“Resonates powerfully on the stage”) and the Guardian (“There is so much emotional depth, surprise and theatrical virtuosity here… What an accomplishment”).
Produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, The Years is playing at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London from 24 January to 19 April 2025.
Currently playing at the Harold Pinter Theatre is Macbeth starring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, to 14 December 2024; followed by Slava’s Snowshow from 18 December 2024 to 12 January 2025.
