A number of big new shows are starting previews tonight, Friday 4 October 2024, in London – all with starry casts.
Olivier Award winner Mark Strong (The Kingsman, A View from the Bridge, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Olivier Award winner and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville (Sherwood, The Crown, Flowers for Mrs Harris) star in Oedipus at the Wyndham’s Theatre.
Billed as an explosive political thriller, the production is adapted and directed by Robert Icke (1984, The Doctor) based on the Ancient Greek tragedy, reimagining Oedipus as a politician poised for election victory.
Oedipus is playing until 4 January 2025.
Also opening in the West End tonight is Academy Award winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist, Peaky Blinders) in new play The Fear of 13 by Lindsey Ferrentino at the Donmar Warehouse.
The Fear of 13 is based on the extraordinary true story of Death Row prisoner Nick Yarris, and is directed by award-winner Justin Martin (Prima Facie).
Also starring Nana Mensah (Presumed Innocent, 13 Reasons Why, Queen of Glory), Michael Fox (Downton Abbey), Aidan Kelly (Killing Eve), Posi Morakinyo (Ain’t Too Proud,), Cyril Nri (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story), Ferdy Roberts (Macbeth) and Tommy Sim’aan (A View from the Bridge), The Fear of 13 is playing in London until 30 November 2024.
Opening over at Marylebone Theatre in London tonight is West Wing and Scandal star Joshua Malina in What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank.
Directed by Olivier and Tony Award-winner Patrick Marber (Leopoldstadt), the play is based on the Pulitzer-finalist short story by Nathan Englander, and plays at Marylebone Theatre until 23 November 2024.
Last night in the West End, a new production of Juno and the Paycock had its premiere at the Gielgud Theatre, starring Mark Rylance (Jerusalem) and J Smith Cameron (Succession); and the Donmar’s acclaimed production of Macbeth started earlier this week at the Harold Pinter Theatre, starring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo.
