Award-winning Broadway musical comedy Shucked may be heading to Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre next summer.
The Broadway director of the show, Jack O’Brien told BroadwayDirect that the show is lined up for London’s open air theatre in Summer 2024.
O’Brien is currently directing the US national tour of Shucked, which starts on 20 October 2024 at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC). “Then I go to London to cast the British version of Shucked, which will be done next summer in Regent’s Park”, he told BroadwayDirect.
Shucked finished up at the Nederlander Theater in New York in January 2024, having opened in March 2023. It closed on Broadway despite running at 85% capacity and grossing around $750,000 a week.
The Broadway cast of Shucked starred Alex Newell, who won a Tony Award for their performance in the show, plus John Behlmann, Kevin Cahoon, Andrew Durand, Grey Henson, Ashley D. Kelley, Isabelle McCalla.
In June 2023 the show randomly promoted on social media that it was set to open in London’s West End in 2023.
Back in October last year the producers confirmed that the show was coming to London, opening at a Cameron Mackintosh-owned Delfont Mackintosh venue in winter 2025.
It’s possible that Shucked will premiere at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, and then transfer into a Delfont Mackintosh venue, which includes the Noel Coward Theatre or the Wyndham’s Theatre.
The country music musical is produced by Mike Bosner and Jason Owen amongst others. The show has songs by Nashville-based composers Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, with a book by Robert Horn, and direction by Jack O’Brien.
Currently playing at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is their acclaimed revival of Fiddler On The Roof, which closes on 28 September 2024.
Shucked would be part of Drew McOnie’s first season as Artistic Director of Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. The director and choreographer joined the venue in January 2024, and will shortly announce his first full season for summer 2025.
