The Kiln Theatre and Paines Plough have announced that Katie Posner, Joint Artistic Director of Paines Plough, will direct the world premiere of Amy Ng’s Shanghai Dolls at Kiln Theatre this April.
Shanghai Dolls runs at the Kiln Theatre from 3 April to 10 May 2024.
Amy Ng’s latest play is based on a true story about a cultural martyr and a cultural oppressor, with two penniless actresses meeting in Shanghai at auditions for Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, set against political upheaval in China. One will go on to become China’s first female director, the other, the architect of the Cultural Revolution.
Amy Ng is a British-Hong Kong playwright, with plays including Under the Umbrella at the Belgrade Theatre Coventry, Acceptance at Hampstead Theatre and Shangri-La at Finborough Theatre.
Katie Posner’s previous directing credits include Fringe First award winner Strategic Love Play by Miriam Battye and You Bury Me by Ahlam at Bristol Old Vic – both for Paines Plough. Also, Richard, My Richard at Shakespeare North Playhouse, The Seven Ages Of Patience at the Kiln Theatre, and Swallows & Amazons at Storyhouse.
Shanghai Dolls is playing at the Kiln Theatre from 3 April to 10 May 2024.
About to start at the Kiln Theatre is Pins and Needles, from 19 September.
