See Stockard Channing and Michael Praed in the world premiere of The Gates of Kyiv, a powerful new play by Ian Kelly.

Starring Hollywood and Broadway legend Stockard Channing (Grease, Six Degrees of Separation) as the fearless Soviet piano virtuoso Maria Yudina, and renowned British actor Michael Praed (The Sound of Music, Robin of Sherwood) as Dmitri Shostakovich, this unique production combines storytelling, music, and dance to bring to an extraordinary true story to life.

In a captivating blend of drama and history, The Gates of Kyiv tells the tale of Yudina, a bold protestor and dissident who risked everything to stand up against tyranny. Featuring performances by Italian-Russian pianist Gala Chistiakova and international ballet star Xander Parish OBE, this production is a tribute to the enduring power of the arts in times of turmoil.

Set against the backdrop of Yudina’s life and her legendary confrontation with Stalin, The Gates of Kyiv culminates in a breathtaking rendition of Mussorgsky’s Great Gate of Kyiv. This iconic piece, originally symbolising Tsarist dominance, now resonates with a defiant spirit as Kyiv stands strong in the face of modern-day challenges.

This production ran at Theatre Royal Windsor from 4-14 September 2024. West End dates to be announced – check back for details or sign-up for alerts.

The Gates of Kyiv tells the story of the extraordinary life of the Soviet piano virtuoso Maria Yudina – fearless protestor, disruptor, and ‘dissident.’ Fiercely defiant of the repressive regime of Joseph Stalin, she publicly denounced him and his regime, yet somehow, she lived.

A play for two actors, a pianist, and a dancer, The Gates of Kyiv promises to be a unique combination of storytelling, music, and dance.
