The Donmar Warehouse in London has announced that Oscar winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist) is set to make his UK stage debut in The Fear of 13 at London’s Donmar Warehouse.
The show will be one of the first for the Donmar’s new Artistic Director Timothy Sheader, formerly of the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.
The Fear of 13 is based on the true life story of American Nick Yarris who, at the age of 21, was convicted of rape and murder and spent 22 years on Death Row, only to have been wrongly convicted. The story was told in an acclaimed 2015 documentary by David Sington, and has been adapted for the stage by Lindsey Ferrentino (Ugly Lies the Bones).
Directed by Timothy Sheader, the creative team also includes set design by Miriam Buether, costume design by Brigitte Reiffenstuel, lighting design by Jon Clark, sound design by Ian Dickinson for Autograph, video design by Ash J Woodward, music composition and director DJ Walde, and casting director Anna Cooper.
The Fear of 13 will play at the Donmar Warehouse from 4 October to 30 November 2024.
As already announced, the new Donmar Warehouse season will also see Broadway hit Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 play at the venue this Christmas, directed by Sheader.
Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, which was inspired by a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace, will play from 7 December 2024 to 8 February 2025.
In early 2025, Tamsin Greig and Celia Imrie will star in new play Backstroke, written and directed by Anna Mackmin (Woman in Mind, Hedda Gabler).
The play is about a middle-aged woman played by Tamsin Greig, caring for her daughter, and her elderly mother, played by Celia Imrie, who has had a stroke.
Backstroke is playing at the Donmar from 15 February to 12 April 2025. Joining Anna Mackmin in the creative team is designer Lez Brotherston, lighting designer Paule Constable and casting director Anna Cooper.
Other shows include a starring role for US actress and Emmy Award winner Samira Wiley (Orange is the New Black) in a revival of Lynn Nottage’s drama Intimate Apparel.
Intimate Apparel is about a black seamstress in early 20th century New York. Nottage’s work has often been staged at the Donmar, most recently Clyde’s starring Giles Terera.
Directed by Lynette Linton, the show’s design is by Alex Berry, lighting by Jai Morjarai, sound by George Dennis, video design by Gino Ricardo Green, music composition by Xana and casting by Anna Cooper and Lotte Hines.
Coming up at the Donmar Warehouse is Skeleton Crew, from 28 June to 24 August 2024.
The Donmar is also transferring their successful production of Macbeth into the West End later this year, directed by Max Webster and starring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo. Macbeth will play the Harold Pinter Theatre from 1 October.
Currently playing in the West End is the Donmar’s transfer of their hit production of musical Next to Normal starring Caissie Levy, which is running at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London until 21 September 2024.
Outside of the Donmar, Timothy Sheader’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar, which he originally staged at the Open Air Theatre, continues to tour the UK.
